GMC - Brief Note
Guntur Medical College has already celebrated
its 50 years of Fruitful Achievements. The construction of this college
was started on 22-6-1946. On 6th July 1954 Clinical Courses are started.
The Medical College was started with 50 Undergraduate students later this
number was enhanced to 150 students by 1960. The P.G Courses in Pre-Clinical
Subjects was started in 1956 and the Clinical subjects in 1958. Now the
College admits 78 P.G students in different specialties both degree and
diploma every year. In addition to the teaching of U.G and P.G ., this
Medical College is offering training Paramedical Staff like Radiographers,
Lab. Technicians, Lab. Attendants, Pharmacists, Nurses, Sanitary Inspectors.
After the Formation of A.P University of Health Sciences in 1989
it was affiliated to A.P.U.H.S.,(Note: Now it is NTRUHS) ,Vijayawada. A
number of Medals and Prizes were instituted to encourage students
to study with more enthusiastic and competitive spirit. Quiz programmes
were conducted at College and National Levels to explore the skills of
the Students . Lots of Sports Activities are going on and number of GMC
Students have won the University blues and athletic awards. GMC is famous
for the Fine Arts and Cultural activities also. This College has conducted
Medical & health exhibition during the years 1956, 1958, 1960, 1971,
1977, 1984 and 1996. There is a Students Co-operative stores and also Students
Canteen in the Campus. The College Library accommodates 150 Undergraduate
students and 50 PG Students and has a separate accommodation for Staff
also. Now Reading room has been constructed by GMCANA
for
the benefit of students. The Men Students have a hostel facilities located
on the Amaravathi Road about 3 Kms. away from the College. There are 2
buildings which provides accommodation for 302 students. Ladies Hostel
opposite to Guntur Officers Club provides accommodation for 210 lady students.
There are College Buses for the transport of Students from hostel to College
and Hospital. Both the hostels are located in a vast area which is used
as Play Ground and different Sports and athletic activities.
Guntur General Hospital has a Bed strength of
1038. About 4-5 thousand people throng the O.P. departments daily
for Medical relief. The Hospital houses the internee’s quarters apart from
the Nursing school.
The transition of GMC into GIMS ( Guntur Institute
of Medical Sciences ) can be achieved by the dedicated and devoted will
power of the staff, students, alumni and good and sympathetic attitude
to the needy ailing patients by each and every employee both in Medical
College and Hospital.
