Department of Anatomy

GMC was established in 1946 in the campus of Government Training College with laboratory facilities impractical subjects at A.C College, Guntur. By 1947 the buildings of training college was suitably altered and the departments of Chemistry. Anatomy, Physiology and Bio-Chemistry were located until July, 1954. In September 1955 the Department of Anatomy was shifted and housed in the present block of Smt. Achanta Rukminamma Memorial Building in the second floor.

Museum is there since the establishment of regular Anatomy Department. It is well equipped with specimens of Embryology, Osteology and Comparative Anatomy. It has to be specially mentioned about the two rare foetal monsters, one showing the simonart’s amniotic bands and another is craniorrhachischisis. The Department is attached with a Cytogenetics Laboratory, which is serving as investigating center for genetic diseases. The cases are being referred from the Department of various specialties in the GGH, Guntur.

ON 29th May, 1996 Sir Astley Paston Cooper’s auditorium with 200 seating capacity was inaugurated by Dr. Koka Mahalakshmana Rao,M.S.,F.I.C.S. former Principal of Guntur Medical College. This Auditorium is the result of keen interest taken by Dr. Koka Mahalakshmana Rao garu. Generous donations offered by some of the teaching faculty members of the college and the General Hospital, distinguished Medical Practioners of Guntur City, and the Shramadhan of all the staff members of the Department of Anatomy. It has to be specially achievement in the History of Anatomy Department.

The Department was headed by Dr.(Mrs.) Lazarus, Dr.(Mrs.) Sarah J.Souri, Dr. K. Govinda Menon, Dr. V. Sita Rama Rao, Dr. V. Ramchandra Rao, Dr. G.R.K..Hari Rao who are stalwarts of Anatomy. 
At Present the staff position of Department is as follows:
2 Professors
8 Assistant Professors/Tutors
Non-teaching Staff members.

At present every year 150 new students are being admitted and during one year of their stay in the Department, they are being taught regional anatomy, dissections, applied anatomy, histology and human genetics as per the teaching schedule.

In the Darwin Hall, statues of Niobe with her daughter Apollo, Darwin, Dr.A.AnanthaNarayana Ayer, Dr.R.Krishna Rao and Andreas Vesalius are the memorable historical sculpture skills of Sri Bellamkonda Venkateshwarlu, former Modeller of Guntur Medical College, Guntur. Recently Sir Henry Gray’s Statue sculptured by Sri Krishna Subba rao is also another attraction in the Hall.

With recent advancement in science and technology, the faculty members also wish to keep up and maintain the high standards to face the challenges of the developing society inturn of the country.
