The Birth & Progress of this Magnificent Institution Guntur medical College, Guntur.

Necessity is the Mother of Invention”. It applies to the origin, and development of the Guntur Medical College also which is celebrating its 50 years of grtuitful achievements. The people in the Central circar belt and Rayalaseema felt the need for better medical care which could be obtained only by having extra health manpower and had conceivedthe bitth fo the Guntur Medical College at Guntur. This concept was nautured, strengthened and concreted by the strong efforts of Shri Tanguturi Prakasam Panthulu garu, the then Chief Minister, and Smt. Achanta Rukminiamma garu, the then Health Minister of composite Madras State, Which led to the delivery of the small neonate of Guntur Midical College. On 27th December 1945 a three mam committee headed by Mahor shone, visited Guntur to assess the facilities to start a Medcal college. This Committee recommended that  only after the solvation of the exixting water problem by the municipality which later assured that the construction of Governament Medical College can be undertaken. At last this was started on 22-6-1946. Dr.G.V.S. Murthy, the Professor of Medicine was appointed as Special Officer. To start with this College was located in the Govt. Training college and Laboratory facilities in pre clinical courses were afforded at the Andhra Christian College, Guntur. The Guntur Medical College and its students owe a lot to the broadmindedness and fenerosity of the then principak, Andhra Christian College, Mr. Sypes, Even in the early infancy, this college had a threat of abolishment by the Madras Government. But due to the synamism, sincere devotion and hard work of Dr. G.V.Smurthy, the Special Officer, the College could overcon this threat and could sustain to progress t the present status. At alst the Government of Madras has reconciled to incorporate the development of Guntur Medical College by sanctioning Rs 12 lakhs in the 1st Five Years plan of 1953. Consequently Shri. A.B. Chetty, the then Health Minister of composite Madras State laid foundation stone to the present Smt. Achnta Rukminiamma Memorail Block, on 13th September, 1953 and the building was declared open on 19-9-1955 by Dr. Bezwada Gopala Reddy, the then Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. This college was affilaited to Andhra University.

                        After the formation fo the Andhra State in October, 1953 a high power committee consisting of late Dr.M.V. Ramana Murthy, the then Director of Midical Services and late Dr. D. Govinda reddy,k the then Principal, Andhra Medical Practitioner and citizen of Guntur, Dr. C. Ramada, Dr. Veeraiah Chowdary and Dr.C. Hanumantha Rao recommended to the Governament of Andhra State for immediate upgrading of the Guntur Medical College by providing facilities fro clinical courses. On the 6th July, 1954, the clinical courses were started with a grand function chaired by Shri. T. Prakasam garu, the then Chief Minister of Andhra State and his cabinet colleagues, the newly formed Andhra State High court Judiciary and committed citizens of Guntur.

                        Dr. D.J. Reddy was appointed as principal in july, 1954 and contunued till October, 1962. Dr. D.J.Reddy did not spare to tap all the resources, worked hard, put in his soul and brain to mould this puny Guntur Medical college into a mighty and magnificient internationally reputed full fledged Medical College. All His efforts are still echoing in the superb campus and fragrance emitting out inspiring the future generations on and on for ever.

                        Late Kala Venkata Rao, the then Finance Minister sanctioned Rs. 5 lakhs for the addition of second floor. Now this magesticv building accommodates the Pharmacology, Social & Preventive Medicine, Microbiology, Pathologym  Forensic Medicine, Anatomy in addition to the main Administrative Office alongwith the Men’s Dinning Hall, Student’s co-operative stores, Games room and Animal House 4 lecture Galleries. The original Medical School building was modified to the present Regional Laboratory, students louges and new Guest and a Lecure Gallery.

                        The upgrading of the District Head Quarters Hospital, guntur has become inevitable to provide teaching facilities to the Medical students, as not only the patients but also the Medical students had to go either to Visakpatnam or to Madra to obtain Medical services and pursue further studies. For this a 220 bedded Hospital was designated as Gvoernment General Hospital Guntur and the bed strength was increased to 330. Dr.M.Munuswamy,MS Progessor of suregery was appointed as the superintendent. Govt General Hospital Rs. 50 Lakhs were sanctioned by the Andhra Pradesh State Government to further enhance the bed strength to 750 by 1963. The Department of Surgery, Medcine, Obstetrics & Gynaecology were expanded by increasing the number of units for better teaching and patinet care purposes. In 1956 the Department of Venereology, Psychatry, Infectious Diseases, T.B., Anaesthesia, Radiology etc., The guntur Medical College Development Committee released Rs 70,000/- for the construction of a building for paediatric wards.

                        Infectious Diseases Hospital was built on the Amaravathi Road 3 K.M away from Guntur. The distirict Tuberculosis Association raised funds and with the Andhra Pradesh Governments funds. A hospital with 200 beds with a modern C.T  Surgery Unit were builtup at Mangalagiri. Later on this hospital was taken over by the A.P. University of health Sciences (in1989) as an expansion of its clinical units and the Tunberculosis unit was shifted to the Infectious Diseases Hospital at Amaravathi  Road and C.T Surgery to the Govt. General hospital, Guntur.

                        The necessary equipment, personnel, nursing staff and others are gradually added to meet the demands of the ailing patients. By the continuous efforts of the successive superintendents, this Govt General Hospital has developed into a fullfledeged prestigious general Hospital with a bed strength  of 1100 today  the superspitalies of Plastic Surgery, Paediatric Surgery, Gastroenterology, Neurology, Nephrology, Clinical  Pharmacology (recently shifted to Osmania Medical College) Radiotherapy with a telecobalt and deep X-ray and Brachy therapy units were developed. The Cardiology Unit had been upgraded as research Center with latest technology by taking donation by the Cardiology Unit had been upgraded as research Centre with latelst technology by taking donation by the Cardiology Society. The Government General Hospital has great reputation world wide for its services and progress. An X-ray plant was installed at I.D. Hospital, Amarvathi Road.

                The Medical college was started with 50 Undergraduate students later this number weas enhanced to 150 students by 1960. The P.G. courses in Pre-clinical subjects was started in 1956 and the clinical subjects in 1958. Now the college admits78 P.G. students in different specialities both degree and diploma every year. In 1965, the Andhrra University constituted a review committee which recommended and approved that the college has been functioning for U.G. and P.G. studies. From 1966 onwards the P.G. examinations were conducted at Guntur Medical college only. Inaddition to the teaching of U.G. and P.g., this Medical college is offering training araMedical staff like Radiographers, Lab. Technicians, Lab. Attendants, Pharamacists, Nurses, sanitary Inspectors. With the efforts of all the Members, this institution is rendering immense Medical & Health Services to the Andhra University and later to Nagarjuna University in 1978. After the formation of A.P. University of Health Sciences in 1989 it was affiliated to the A.P.U.H.S., Vijayawada. The Government Dispensary at Tadikonda has been converted into Rural Health Centre by the efforts of Sri Gogineni Kanakaiah, who donated land for the centre. This is attached to the Social & Preventive Medicine Department as the Rural Training centre. This College has a Mobile Ophthalmic Unit for prevention of blindness it offers of guntur, Krishna, Nellore and Prakasam districts, for reorientation in Maternity and Child Services, in the from of C.S.SM.- IPPVI DTU Programmes from 1994 onwards. The College also offers I.C.D.S. services to the districts of  Guntur and Ongole. Number of C.M.E. Programmes in various faculties are organised every year by different departments for refreshing, updating knowledge and latest advances in Medical Education.

This college has N.S.S.schemes to encourage the students to serve to serve the needy people. A number of medals and prizes were instituted to encourape students to studay with more enthusiastic and competetive spirit. Quiz programmes were conducted at College and National levels to explore the skills of the students. In 1997 our college students stood II in the National IAP Quiz competitions held at Ahmedabad and our  students came first in N.T.S.C. held at Hyderabad . Lost of Sports activities are going on and number of Guntur Medical Collegs students havae won the University blues and  athletic awards.

            Our College is famous for the Fine Arts and Cultural activites also. This College has conducted Medical & Health Exhibition during the years 1956, 1958, 1960, 1971, 1977 and 1984 and recently from 20th to 27th December, 1996 on the eve of the Golden Jubilee Celebrations, where it has attracted huge crowds of people in and around Guntur District.

            There is a students co-operative stores registered in 1948 catering to the needs of the students – which also runs the Student’s Canteen.

            The present Library was started in 1954, with a very few books and journals – in a small portion of the Physiology Department. Later it was shifted to the present Regional Laboratory and later, on Febrary7 1962 separate bulding was opened  for Library with Auditotium on Ist Floor, through the efforts of the then Principal Dr. D.J. Reddy. The Library

 Could procure the back volumes of Journals dating 1930 from a large number of American Medical College (USIs), British council, CiBA (formulated) W.H.O., UNICEF and many generous donors of past and present. The Library accommodates 150 Undergraduate and 50 Post graduate students and has a separate accommodation for staff also. The Guntur Medical college Alumni of North America has donated a photocopying machine. A video Library was launched on 15th August, 1955 by the then Principal Prof. K.M. Lakshmana Rrao, with a T.V. and V.C.R and a collection of 26 cassetes on Medical topics. A generator was installee in 1992, an essential instruments for uniterrupted studies to overcome the frequent power breaks. At present the Library has a collection of 24,446 books and subscriber to 50 periodicals.

            From 1956 onwards the college and Hospital showed keen interest in pursuing Medical research and consequently ICMR sanctioned the establishement of

1.      Beriberi Unit

 

2.      Research Unit in Nutrition

 

3.      Research Scemes in Pharmacology

 

Department.

 

4.      Research in Investigations of Oral Cancer in the Department of Pathology.

 

The Andhra Pradesh Government has established Virus Research centre, Central Research Lab., Central Ph’oto Illustration Department, Regional Laboratory etc. Several Research Projects were done which contributed to the original   Medical Literature.

 

            The fmen Students have a hostel facilities located on the amasravathi Road about 3 Kms. Away from the college. There are 2 building which provides accommodation for 302 students. For the Lady students, there is a lbuilding opposite to Guntur Officers club and Provides accommodation for 210 Lady students. There are college Buses fro the transport of students from hostel to college and hospital. Both the nHosterls are located in a vast area which is used as play gound and different sports and atheletic activities.

 

            With such a prestigious and magnificient backgound, I hope thjis college will further progress an prosper to raise to higher and higher levels both in the academic as well as patient care. They can only be achieved by the dedicated and devoted will power of thre staff and students and good and sympathetic attitude to needly ailing patients by each and every employee both in Medical college and Hospital.
