MY REMINISCENCES

DR. N.V.S. CHOWDARY, M.S., F.I.C.S.,

Formerly principal of Guntur Medical College &

Superintendent of Govt. Genrral Hospital

I am extremely happy to be one of the senior members of the large family of Gunter Medical College Alumni. It may not be out of place to mention that I am the only Alumnus (48) to hold the post of Superintendent of govt. General Hospital and the Principal – 1/c  of guntur Medical college and then survive to participate in the golden jubilee celebrations of the Almamater. Many a member may not be able to se the mother college to salute her as they reach the evening of their lives by that time. I really appreciate Dr.. (Lt. Gen) N.R. Krishnan, M.D., (First batch, 46) who has come all the way to see the Almamatrer and participate in the Golden Jubilee Celebrations (30th &31st December 1996) and we thankl Dr. Jhansi Vani, MBBS., DGO., (1st batch) for her interest in her Almamater.

The Old Medical School building were constructed in 1927 to start LIM coursen which was popular at that time. But somehow it could not come into existence, probably due to emergency of Andhra University at waltair. The Justice party led by Raja of Panagal wanted to have modern medical institutionn at Visakhapatnam (i.e) Andhrra Medical College, King George Hospital. Then these buildings ironically gave shelter to A.U. durinig 2nd world ward p;eriod. Soon after, these building were vacated in 1945. The advisory Government (British) of Madras Presidency renewed the old proposal as these areas (Telugu districts ) Were often effectred by epedemics like cholera, small pox, cdrebral Malaria too. Dr. R. venkta Rao, DMO., informed the Surgeon General, Madras That Govt. Gr. Hospital, Guntur is quite big and thus Medical College can be started here. Expert Committee (consisting of Dr. P. Kutumbaiah & Dr. T. Bhaskarra Menon, Major shone ) was appointed on 2nd Feb. 1946 to have the feasibility report. They also thought this Medical College will also help the people of ceded districts to prevent the frequent emergence of epidemics, by creating local medical man-power.

The 2nd war ended, Dr. (Lt.col.) G.V.S. murhty, M.D., was posted as special officdr on 17th september 1946, to organise medical college scheme in the old medical school buildings by H.M. Hon’ble Smt. Achantra Rukmini Laxmipathi. She did lot of spade work to get water, electricity gas connections and necessary structural alterations to provide lecture halls and laboratories. Dr. G. Vareed, MBBS., M.Sc., (Phys) has become the first princi[pal of Guntur Medical college in addition to his duties as professor of Physiology of prepare the students for the Pre-registration examinations in December 46 in consolation with the Andra University. The first batch (1946) student were practically trained for this examinations in A.C. College labs. First MBBS examinatins took place for the first batch in December 1948. So the period of pre-clinical course of MBBS was two and half-years. The Anatomy Department was kept in one builing and the Physiology departmkent, administration section were arranged in the main block. The sucfcessful students in 1st MBBS were sent ot Andhra Medical College, Vizag for clinical courses (3 yers) Dr. Vareed was transferred and Dr. B. Lazarus Prof. Of Anatomy, was posted as Principal. After few months, Dr. K. Govinda menon was posted in her place. No administrator was willingly coming to guntur and they weresending reports to surgeio-general, Madras that there was acute scarcity of watrer in Guntur and so it wou;ld be difficult ot continue the Medical college in view of this water problem. The country became independent in 1947 and congress party came to power under sri ramaswamy  reddiyar. He had to supportn the personal visit report of Hon’ble  Achanta Rukmini Laxmipathi in 1946. But yet the adverse reports of the principals were discussed and in 1948, the seats of Guntur Medical college were reduced to 25 from 50. This had become debatable subject in newspapers too. I got selected inthis bath of 25 and thus there is uncertainity hangingover. One of my colleagues, Dr. Mallikharjuna reddy after attending classes has applied for B.E. to quit the medical college bedause he did not like the disseftions o the earth worms & codkroachs and dead bodies. The back ground is that our seven groups MPC and naturally maths students would like to to go engineering. In those days MPC group was considered for every branch of science and these students will usually get the top ranks. After 6 months, when we were going to appear for pre-registraion examinations there was a rumour floating that there will be no college next year. I was very much upset by this rumour and my parents and teachers were pressing me to go to engineering College, Guindy, Madras. The then Genneral Secretary of Guntur Medical College Student’s Association Dr. rayalewsara Rao Gave me advise not to leave the college by approaching the principa. And promienent practitioners like Dr. P. veeraiah chowdary, Dr. A. chalapati Rao, Dr.P.H.vittal rao and Dr. G.V. Hanumantha rao and his efforts have gathered public opinion against the shifting of the College . The presence of Andhra Ministers like Sri Kalluri Chandrajmouli, Sri Gopalareddi etc., in Rreddia Cabinet gave weight to continue the college here.  Inspite o the congress ingovernkment, communists got more MLA seats, est., Guntur Krishna & Godavasri Districts. In 1948 major Gen. Chowdary has occupied (Nizam’s State) Hyderabad in a swift police action ordered by the powerful Home Ministerk Hon’ble vallabhai patel. This was done mainly to continue the Medical College to please the polulation in these disctricts and thus uncertainity ended jby 49.

There is an ayyar Hotel Opposite to Dist. Court even now. It used to cater thr services to the students of Rayalaseema and they were feeling happy with the hotel management and his services.

We used to feel in Anatomy building rather than in physiology blick’s probably the staff Dr. v. Rama Chandra Rao, Asst. Professor of Anatomy and Dr. V.V. Subba Rao, the demonstrater in Anatomy were moving closely with the students in dissection hall Dr. G. Subb Rao (ADPH) was my dissection partner and he used to show even a cutaneousn nerve intck and I thought he would become a surgeon. It is not easy to guess the future life of a person. Actually I wanted to settle as person. Actually I wanted to settle as a practising sureon in Guntur but I had to serve the Government only and I do not have regrets inserving the Alma Mater finally. On completing the 1st MBBS. We have joined 3rd year in Andhrra Medical College, Vizag in 19651.

There was no further improvement of the College until the separate Andhra state was  carved by the Supreme sacrifice of Sri Potti Sree Ramulu garu. Then the Higfht court for the new state was transferred to Guntur and the capital was formed at kurnool in 1953. This has given rise to an idea to the Govt. to start another medical college at kurnool and the water problem of Guntur was solved by sanctioning Sangam Jagarlamuci head watrer works, Sangam Jagarlamuci. The Chief Minister Hon’ble sri Taguturu Prakasam Pantulu himself inaugurated the clinical courses of Guntur Medical College on 5th july 1954. Dr. K.N. Rao, M.D., M.S., DITD., FACS., took over the charge of Director of Medical Services Government of Andhra state in Madras itself and Dr. d. Jagannadha Reddyk M.D (Path) was selected and posted quickly as principal of Guntur Medical college on 26th July, 1954. As we see, he has put his heart and soul in every brick of the new gigantic building that has comd up in the campus. The rest of history is known to many members of Guntur Medical College.

I took the dark period of 1946-5o to probe in the early life of Guntur Medical College when the Guntur Medical College Child was not immunised well. I have given the dertails of students selected (48) in many batch as statement.

I than the organisers of Guntur Medical College Golden nJubileeCelebrations committee and Chairkan Dr. N. Sivarrama Prrasad, M.D.,  and sourvenir committee especially Dr. N.V. Ramana rao, M.D., and Dr. Phani Bhushan M.D., for the interest they have taken to get in printed.

Let me tell you here : in honour and memory of founder batch of students  (1st batch of 1946) of medical College especially late Dr. Rayaleswara Rao, M.S., DO., Prof.& HOD of the Ophthamology, Guntur Meidcal college who has served his Almamater faithfully and honestly without any personal gain, I wish to donate my eyes after my death.
