The Dental Department was in existence in the District
Headquarters Hospital with a Honorary post till 1954. Dr. v. Nageswara Rao was
the then Honoray Asst. Surgeon.
In 1955, the post of Lecturer in Dental Surgery was Created with Dr.
T.L.K..Row MBBS., As the first
lecturer. He underwent a dental course for 6months at Dental wingk madras. A
Central Sanction of Rs 20,000/- was made available to purchase the Dental
Chairs and other equipment. At that time, five in-patient beds were also
provided.
In 1957, for the first time, a qualified Dental Surgeion Dr. B.Seshadri,
B.D.S., was posted, mostly dental extractions work only was carried out due to
the meager facilities available at that time. The out-patient strength had
been increasing from that time. After Dr. B. Seshadri’s transfer to
Hyderabad there was a gap of one year till Dr. c. Krishnarjuna Rao, BDS., was
posted in 1959 In 1961 one more Dentral Asst. Surgeion post was created with
Dr. Md. Hansa as dental Asst. Surgeon whenDr. C. Krishnarjuna Rao, was senton deputation to Bombay for M.D.S. (1962-64) Dr. C.S. Murthy took
charge of the Department.
In 1970 the Dental Department was upgreaded with the creation of
Professor of Dental Surgery post. Dr. C. Krishanrjuna Rao, was posted as
Professor. Dr. B.S.R.C. prabhakara rao, M.D.S., as asst. Professor and Dr. V.
Subbarao, B.D.S.,as Dentral
Asst. Surgeion were the other staff members. In 1984 Dr. M. Ramaswami, M.D.S.,
was posted as Professor. The in – patient bed strength has been increased to
Eight.
During 1971-73 under I.C.M.R. project a smear sutdy programme was
undertaken to detect the Oral Cancer lesions.
In 1987, Posts of Dental Technician and Dental Hygienist were created
to assist the Dental Surgeons working in the department.
Several papers have been published from the Department in the last 15
years.
