The Ear, Nose, and Throat Department of Governemt
General Hospital, Guntur Was first started in 1936 aas a part of District head
Quarters Hospital and managed by an honourary Assistrant Surgeon, Dr.
Vadapalli Krishna Murthy, L.M.P. In 1949 Dr. Sankara Mallikharjuna Rao,
M.B.B.S., who had a special training in ENT disease under Dr. B. Tirumala Rao,
F.R.C.S., took charge of the department. The Ent Department was housed in a
small room attached to the then causality.Four beds inn the surgical wards were allotted to ENT. Operations like
removal pof Tonsils. Adeneids, Mstoid operations and removal of foreign bodies
from Ear, Nose and Throat wrre Successfully undertaken.WhenDr. Mallikharjuna Rao
resigned in1951, Dr. V. Krishna Murthy again took over the department and was
incharge till 1955.
In 1955, When the clinical courses were started, the Hospital was
upgraded to a general hospital to meet the needs of the Medical ‘College and
the honorary system was abolished. Dr. G. Lakshmipathi, M.S., D.L.O., took
over the Department. He did all the spadework and indented for all the
necessary equipment. The out patient department was moved along with
Ophthalmic O.P. to spacious rooms and the number of beds were increased to
ten. One lecturer and one Tutor posts were creared in1955 June and Dr. K.
Krishna Murthy, B.A.M.S., took over the Department as Lecturer. During his
period, the department developed fully as a teaching department of MedicalCollege. When the new O.P. block was built, the O.P. moved over to the
present spacious rooms. In 1959, the post of Lecturer was upgraded to
Professor, Tutor post designated as Asst. Professor and second Asst. Professor
Post was created and Dr. K. Krishna Murthy becfame the Professor Of E.N.T.
post Graduate courses werestrarted
in 1960.
In 1964 Dr. P. Narasimaha Rao,M.S., F.I.C.S., F.A.C.S., Took over the
Dept. as Professor and principal of the guntur Medical College, and under his
guidance the department was fully developed. An air conditioned, sound proof,
Audiometry room was built and the new ENT and Ophthalmic Operation Theatres
were commissioned. Accommodation was provided for research. A third Asst.
Professor’s post was created. In 1966 the Indiann Medical council sent a
inspection commission to visit the College,
Which mentioned this department as one of the best teaching departments in our
country.
In 1968December When Dr.
P. Narasimh Rao, retired, Dr. G. Lakshmi Pathi took over the department. One
additional professor and fourth Asst. Professor posts were created and Dr. K.V.
Asst. Professor posts were created and Dr. K.V. Narasimha Chari was posted as
additionl professor., The bed strength increased to 40. Post graduates are
being trained for D.L.O. and M.S., (ENT). All major operations were undertaken
during the periods. During the period frojm 1973 to 19883 Dr. V.S.K. Murthy
Dr. B.Venugopala Rao, Dr. N.V. Subbamma, Dr. B.Subrahmnya Setty, Dr. Gurunadha
Rao, Dr. Daniel Elies and Dr. R. Sampada rao were in this institutions as
professors.
Dr. K.C. Hanumanthappa took over the charge of ENT department during
the year 1983-84 and Dr. Y.D.S. Ravi joined as professor during the eyar 1984.
Inthe year 1986 the ENT Chapter
and later faculty members of Vijayawada joined the guntur ENT chapter. During
this year the Department of ENT hosted Andhra Pradesh state ENT conference in
the premises of Guntur Medical College, Guntur, Which won the appreciation of
every one. The award of Gold medal was introduced in the year 1986 to the best
under graduate student in ENT from the regular batch of students. In the 1987
the ENT department started inviting eminent persons to give guest lectures and
conducting head and neck workshops. At the initiation of Dr. K.C.
Hanumanthappa, Allergy clinic was started on 22-1-1990 in the department of
ENT and Dr. J.V. Anjaneyulu, MS., D.L.O., M.C.A.I., was made incharge of
Allergy clinic.
Dr. C. Narasimhulu joined as professor of ENT in the year 1992. In the
year 1993 due to the efforts of Dr. Y. Prabhakara rao. NEURO OTOLOGY Clinic
was started in the Department of ENT and Government of Andhra pradesh
sanctioned the staff pattern of one civil asst. Surgeon, one staff Nurse, One
MNO., and one Thoty to the Neuro Ortology Clini Dr. J.V. Anjaneyulu joined as
Professorof ENT on 1-6-96 and
became the Head of the Department of ENT on 1-10-96. The guntur ENTd Chapeter
organised Andhra Pradesh state ENT Conference during Septemeber 1986. The
existing staff position of the ENT department is one professor, four
Asst.professors and civil Asst.Surgeon and four M.S., and one D.L.O. post
graduate students. One Professor’s post is vacant.
