Though Guntur Medical College was started in 1946 the
department of Forensic Medicine was formally opened by Dr. B. Gopala Reddy the
then Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh on 19-9-1955 This is because until July,
1954 teaching to students was given in the preclinical subjects only and then
the studentswere transferred to
Andhra Medical College and to colleges in Madras. Dr D. Sundara Siva Rao, M.D.
was the founder of the Department and held the chair from 1956 to 1959 and was
succeeded by Dr. V. Kameswara Rao, M.D. The other Professors were Dr. V. David
Edward Dr. J.S. Sarojini, Dr. D. Govindiah, Dr. K. Krishna Reddy Due to the
continued efforts of the staff of the Department from the time of inception,
the Department resulted in acquisition of a wealth of teaching material and
earned a good name of efficient running of the Department.
The Department is well equipped and is having
self-sufficient library and a good museum with all kinds of mounted specimens,
bones, weapons, snakes poisons etc., of medicolegal importance for the benefit
of students There is enough material even for the postgraduates.
This Dept. conducts training to medical students: Medical, Judicial and
Police Officers: research on Medicolegal work : such as postmortem examination
of sexual offences etc: and extension programmes aimed at suicide prevention.
