Department of Medicine
“THE
LIFE IS SHORT, THE ART IS LONG, JUDGEMENT DIFFICULT, EXPERIENCE
FALLIBLE,
OPPORTUNITY FLEETING” -
IT’S A HARD TASK MASTER.
The Department of Medicine for
Undergraduate teaching had its inception in the year July,1954, Originally it
catered to the needs of Undergraduate teaching only, till the year 1958.
Thereafter from the year 1958, it has been imparting training to the
Postgraduates in Medicine. For a short period,.during the “years” it also
trained students in D.G.M. (Diploma in General Medicine)
The
Department was headed by Dr. K. Kodandaramaiah, who was widely known
throughout the State , for his shrewd clinical acumen. He was a very good
teacher and a kind hearted Physician. He made the art of Medicine appear so
simple by his analytical skill. He proved his mettle as an astute administraor
in the capacity of superintendent, Govt. General Hospital , guntur. The
Department also had the good fortune of having able reachers – Dr. S.
Ramachandra Rao, Dr. K. Suryanaryana, Dr.v.s. Raghunathan, Dr. V.S.N. Murty,
Dr. L.G. Krishnaiah, Dr. T. Srinivasan, Dr. P. Sivaramakrishna Rao and Dr. C.
Mallikarjuna Rao; during the years 1960 to 1970 dr. C.M. Rao is a recipient of
“best teacher” award.
Each
one of them individually and collectively had trained a large number of
Physicians, who today have earned a repute of their own in various
sub-specialties of Medicine; both Nationally and internationally. It is but
befitting to recall the innovative methods of their teaching, without the
modern aids of technology; which helped in honing up the art of deduction in
clinical medicine.
In
the 70s and 80s, the sub-specialties of Cardiology, Neurology, Gastro-enterology
and Nephrology, have been instituted.
Unfortunately
all these departments are today lacking in material support of diagnostic
aids, except the Department of Cardiology. The Department of Cardiology was
one of the earliest to have a coronary care unit in the early 70s, headed by
the dynamic, Professor Dr.P.L. Rao Dr. P.L. Rao had his training in cardiology
in assiciation with world famous cadiologist dr. Helen Taussing at the
“Johns Hopkin’s “ at maryland , U.S.A.
