Department of Microbiology
The Gopal Reddy the then Chief Minister opened the
Achanta Rukminamma Memorial buildings of our college on 19-09-1955. The
Department of Bacteriology along with the other departments are housed in this
building. 150 students at the end of 12 months as part-I
after passing I MBBS Examination and part-II consisting of Forensic
Medicine and Pathology including Bacteriology were taken at the end of 2 years
after passing I(MBBS examination.
The post graduate degree course MD (Branch II – (a)] pathology
including bacteiology. Was started inb the year 1959 along with the other post
graduate courses. The present vice Chancellor of University of health Sciences
Dr. C.s. Bhaskaran (B.C. Roy Award Winner ) and Ex. Vice Chancelor of
padmavathi Mahila University Dr. K. Rajya Lakshmi Were the first two post
graduate students who success fully passed in the year 1961 from the
department of Bacteriology, Guntur Medical college Guntur. In the beginning,
the college was affiliated to Andhra University.
Subsequently the Departfment of Bacteriology was separated from the
Department of Pathology and was made as a separate subject and renamed as
Microbiology. For The students of I & II clinical year, Microbiology was
taught for a period of 1 ½ years. At present the examination in Microbiology
is being held along with
Pharmacology as II M.B.B.s. part- I During 1978, the college was affiliated to
Nagarjuna university and as such the derees were awarded by the Nagarjuna
University. The MD (Microbiology ) was also separated from pathology and the
degree of MD (Microbilogy ) branch II-(a) is being awarded after completion of
course at the end of 3 years. As on date 25post graduate students were awarded
MD degree from this department. Out of them some are working as
Microbiologists abroad, some are working as Professors in other states and
some are working as Professors in our state. Present
Professor & Head of the Dep[artment Dr. K. Vara Prasad Rao was a
student of this college.
In addition to training MBBS, DCP and MD students, other ancillary
courses like sanitary inspectors and lab Technician training was also imparted
in this department. In the year 1986 the college has been affiliated to
University of health Sciences, as such MBBS and MD degree are being awarded by
University of Health Sciences.
The Department also undertakes diagnostic investigative work of the
specimens received from the attached teaching hospitals (GGH & IDH) which
is having a bed strength of 1200. The Microbilogical investigations Undertaken
include Cultures of urine, exudate, blood, anaerobic, tuberculosis and fungus.
The serological investigations undertaken in this department are VDRL test,
Widal test, Weil Felix, Brucella agglufinatuion test, BHs Ag, RF, CRP, ASOT
and Coombs test. On an average, about 10,000 specimens are processed annually
in this department.
