The neurosurgery dept. of Guntur Medical College &
Govt. General Hospital has seen the dawn of the day in the month of Julyk,
1969, with one Professor and one Assistant Professor.
Dr. G.B. Rajendra Prasad took charge as Assistant Professor and Dr. M.V.
Subrahmanian Servedas the Frist Professor Neurosurgery and Neurosurgeion of
this institute.
The depatment was started with sanctioned bed strength of 15 (10 male
& 5 female. Later increased to 29 by adding additional 14 beds for Head
injuries ward)
The lone neurosurgery assistant surgeon was on call duty all the days
in the year which still continues even after twentfive years inspite of
addtion of two more posts but never filled up inspite of availability of
qualified persons in the state.
The avarage out patinet attendence per year is around 1500 to 2000 and
an In Patient year is around 500 to 800 includinng trauma. It is surprsing to
note that an average trauma admissions are around 5-6 per day and mostly these
are assaults.
The cold surgical procedures range from 200 to 300 per year.
Surprisingly congential Neurological disorders are very frequent in these
parts as compared other parts of the state. Drs. B.Subba rao & G.B.
Rajendra prasad worked for varying periods and did a remarkable job. Because
of lack of facilites, Vascular surgery and microsurgical modrn stereotactic
diagostic procedures are not undertaken.
The dept. needs revamping and reinforcement with modernization of
operative theatre with modern equipment.
