The department of obstetrics & Gynecology was
started in 1955. Dr. C. Rajwswari, M.D. was founder professor assisted by Dr.
A. Savitri, D.G.O., with an initial bed strength of 50, aseptic and septic
labor rooms and an eclampsia room which were located in the present
Orthopedics ward.
In 1957, the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology was shifted to a
new block (at present surgical unit IV and Neuro Surgery department) andSubsequently to its present building in 19677. The present bed strength
is 100 in Ante natal and Gynaec wards. The Department has 4 aseptic, 2 septic
couches and 40 beds inn post partum unit.
The Department has4 units
with four professors, the IVunit
professor being in charge of the postpartum unit also. The Department has full
fledged postgraduate teaching facilities involved in research work and round
the clock patient care.
The Department services 10,000 new ante natal and gynecological
patients every year. 4,000 to 4,500 deliveries are conducted annually. 2,500
sterilzation operations are performed perannum. Colposcopy and cancer
screening facilitiesare
available. For diagnostic and sterilization operations, laparoscopic
facilities are available.
ACADEMIC
EXCELLENCE
Research activtity has been given utmost importance, apart from post
graduate research work.
The Department has been conducting Continuing Medical Education
programmes since 1980. In 1991, the G.M.C. alumni of North Americ, have
instituted the “ Dr. C.G. Rama Murhty Endowment Fund”CME program , with financial assistance from old students.
The Department has also conducted Workshops on “sage motherhood “
in association with ADFOG, Singapore (1994), and “Indo US update” with the
financial support of the Medical Council of India (1995).
The Department also organizes workshops, symposia, seminars, maternal
mortality meetings and monthly academic meetings.

Dr, G.R.K. Raju has authored a book titled “Text Book of Obsterics
& Feral Medicine”. He is also the recipient of the “Best Teacher
Award”.
The present staff members of the Department are highly indebted to Dr.
R. Satyabhama Reddy, Dr. N. SubhadraDevi and Dr. C. Savitri, who were the
trend setters for good bed side manners and acquiring clinical knowledge and
critical self analysis by conducting monthly CPC of maternal and perinatal
mortality.
The Department hasgood
team of Assistant Professors and Post Graduate students, who are yound and
enthusiastic. They have been activelypromoting
the cause of Continuing Medical Education. Some of the post graduates are
appearing for their National Board examination.
