Guntur Dist. Head Quarters Hospital was elevated as
Teaching Hospital in 1954. The bed strength was 350.
A small beginning was made in Orthopaedic Department with a single post
of Lecturer in Orthopaedics which was beld by Dr. G. Ethirajulu, with a bed
strength of 8 only. It was situated nearby the casualty which is at present
CSSD. The bed strength was subsequently increased to 15 in the same year and a
separate Orthopaedic wrd was started in the present E.N.T. Ward.
The Post of Lecturer was converted to the post of professor in the year
1960. Thus the credit of bei9ng the first lecturer/professor and head of the
Department of Orthopaedics goes to Dr. G. Ethirajulu, Incidentally happens to
be the first qualified Orthopaedic surgeon in A.P.He rendered yeomen services to the trauma patients and Polio effected
patients. He was also instrumental in getting the P.G. courses in Othopaedics
to the college in 1962. The Examination centre for P.G. courses in guntur was
strarted at 1966 and was affiliated to Andhra University, Vizag.
In 1970 , 2nd Post on Professor was created and 30 more beds
were allotted, and the ward was stationedseparately in the present E.N.T. Block. The second post was held by
late Dr. Syed latiff who was also P.G. Student of this college and was working
along with Dr. G. Ethirajulu.
In November 1977, When the devastating Cyclone hit the coastal
Districts nealy 1000 patients were admitted and treated in the Orthopedic
wards. Department of Orthopedics could serve these unfortunate people with
great excellency and in the result,there was no casualty.
During the visit of Excellency Mrs. Sarada Mukherjee, the Governor of
A.P. Was moved by the pathetic situation of paraplegia patients, and with
theefforts of her along woth Governors Secretary Mr. Mohan Kanda, Dr. G.
Ethirajulau, Dr. Lakshmana Rao the paraplegia ward was built and started with
the funds by the British Government. The foundtion stone for paraplegia ward
was laid down by Her excellency Smt. Sarada Mukhrjee Governor of A.P. on 9th
may 19798 and paraplegia ward was inaugurated by Sri. N.A.I. French, British
Deputy High commissioner in South India on 20th February 1980.
In 1987, 3rd unit in Orthopaedic was created as professor of
Traumatalogy with 30 beds.
Recently, the Department of Orthopaedics as participated in
Multipurpose in Multipurpose camp for Physical Hadicapped persons. Around
40,000 physical Handicapped Certificates were issued in the Guntur District.
Recently, then department along with the other colleagues in the
district has successfully conducted C.M.E. Program in the name of Dr. G.
Ethirajulu and XXVVII A.P. Chapter Annual conference Orthopedic surgeons, in
the golden Jubilee year of the College, Which was prized by all delegates and
guest speakers as the best A.P. Chapter Conference.

Late Dr. G. Ethirajulu the 1st Orthopedic Surgeon to occupy
the principal Guntur Medical College, Guntur in the cadre of Additional
Director and Dr. M. Markendayan is the first Orthopedic surgeon to occupy the
post Superintendent, Govt. General Hospital, Guntur. Dr. G. Venkata ramaiah
also held the post of Superintendent Govt. General Hospital, Guntur in the
Cadre of Additional Director.
