Pediatric Department was
started by Dr.Y.R. Reddy in 1956 with a ward f 20 beds , and in 1958 a new pediatric
block was constructed with the help of local Red Cross and other donors, with
a strength of 30 beds.
In December 1962, Dr.K.R.
Purohit took charge as head of the department. In 1964, the Department
received UNICEF help in the shape in the of equipment of vehicles, and the bed
strength was raised to 50.
With the help of the vehicle,
the pediatric Department of Guntur Medical College Guntur has been supervising
child been supervising child welfare activities bot only in Guntur and Krishna
districts but also in adjoining Nellore and West Godavari Districts.
Diploma in Child Health was
started in 1960, and M.D. (pediatrics) in 1963.
Dr.S.Brahmanandam took over as head of the department from June,1970, and
continued till 1975.
In
view of the increase Out patient and inpatient turnout, a second unot was
sanctioned and created in 1974 and is still functioning. At present there are
two units.
In
1975, Dr. Y.R. Reddy, again took charge as Head of the department and as
Superintendent of Govt. General Hospital, Guntur. Between 1975 and 1976 Dr.
P.S. Murthy took charge as head of the Department of Paediatrics for a brief
period of 3 months, in 1976.
Dr.
S. Brahmanandam, again took charge as head of the Department in 1976 and
continued upto 1981 till he retired.
Dr. B.N. Sastry took over as
Head of the department in 1982-83. Dr. P.A.N. Raju, Professor was posted to
Second Unit in 1982.
Dr. A.V.Ramana, took charge as
head of the Department between 1984-85. During his tenure, A.Pl. state
Paediatric Conference was held in Guntur (with grand success) in 19985.
Dr. Y. Apparao took charge as
head of the Department between 1986-88.
Dr. B. N. Sastry, took over as
Professor & HOD in1988 and worked till November 1995 when he was promoted
and transferred toking George Hospital, Visakhapatnam as Superintendent and
HOD of Paediatrics of Andhra MedicalCollege,
Visakahpatnam.
Dr. A. Ramamohana Rao ,
presently professor & HOD of Paedicatrics Rangaraya Medical college ,
Kakinada, Worked as Professor for second unit between n1993-94.
DEVELOPMENT
A regular second unit was
created in 1982 with two Assistant Professors and Post graduates for D.C.H.,
and M.D., in 1993, a premature unit which was originally attached to
Obstetrics & gynaeclogy Department for better care and supervision. It was
strengthened with UNICEF equipment comprising of latest Incubators. Warmers
Phototheraphy Units, Suction apparatus, Bilirumbinometer for up-to-date
neonatal care in1994.
In
1994 a separate Diarrhea Treatment and Trraining Unit was sancjtioned and
estahblished with the help of the world health Organisation.
STAFF PATTERN:
Two
Professors-One for each unit
Six
Asst. Professors-Three for each unit.
Post Graduate Students-One M.K., and two D.C.H., for each year under each Professor.
BED
– STRENGTH :
50 beds for sick children, 5 for the neonatres, and 5 for lthe
premature side.
An intesive Neonatal Care Unit is functioning with latest equipment
donated by the UNICEF for exchange transfusion, Phototheraphy and warmers.
INTENSIVE
PAEDIATRIC CARE UNIT:
Each unit is having 10 Beds for emergency care management separately.
NURSING
STAFF:
One head nurse, three staff Nurses and some students Nurses for general
wards, and one Staff Nurse Exclusively for the premature unit.
LABORATORY
:
A bed side Laboratotry is available in the ward (for the regualr and
routine blood examination, as well as urine and motion examination.)
TEACHING
ACTIVITIES :
Each year 2 M.D., 4 D.C.H., altogether 6 M.D., and 12 DCH post graduate
students are invited in the Training.
INTER-DEPARTMENTAL
ACTIVITIES :
This Department is also involved in neonatal care training for the
Postgraduate students of Gynecology & Obstetrics, and Pediatrics for
General Medicine Students. The Paediatric Post graduates are deputed no
Neonatology, Labour rooms, Cardiology, Neurology, Psychiatry, Dematology,
General Medicine, and Pediatric Surgery to update their knowledge.
UNDER
GRADUATES :
About 150 students of IV years in the O.P. and the same number of final
Years in the I.P. are trained every year for a period of one month.
INTERNEES
:
About 10-12 Internees are given training every month in the Management
of common Pediatric Problems and acute pediatric emergencies for a period of
one month as compulsory program of Internship.
TRAINING
OF MEDICAL OFFICERS AND PARAMEDICAL STAFF:
A 10 days Intensive Programme is hbeing given to the Primary Health
Centre Medical Officers in batches of 6 to8 from Nellore, Prakasam, Guntur and
Krishnaunder C.S.S.M. Programme.
SOCIAL
& COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES :
1.Post of Lecturer in Post-Partum Programme was creatred in
1974 to attend the new born babies & also immunization programmese in GGH
& Guntur Town.
2.Participated in the school health programmes conducted
during August 1996 in the district of Guntur.
3.Participated actively in the Pulse Polio Immunization
Programme during1995-96.
