The year 1946 is memorable to
the people of Guntur an neighbouring districts, as Guntur Medical College was
founded in response to the representati9ons made by the Andhra Provincial
Branch of Indian Medical Association and the efforts of late Mrs. Rukmini
Lakshmipathi, the then Minister for Health of the composite Madras State.
There was no Pharamacologyn Department in the collete to start with.
Instructions to students was imparted in the pre-clinical subjects only. The
students used to be transferred to Andhra Medical college and Colleges in
Madras for further studies in Clinical Subjects.
Further
develoment in the College included the laying of foundation stone for the
Pathology Block which includes the Pharmacology Department by Sri A.B. Shetty,
the then Minister for Health of the Composite Madras State in September 1953.
On the 6th July 1954 late Sri T. Prakasam, lthe then Chief Minister
of Andhra Strate inauguarated the clinical courses at this college.
The
Achanta Rukminamma Memorial buildings i.e. the Pathology Block which was
formally opened by Dr. B. Gopala Reddy the then Chief Minister of Andhra State
on 19-9-1955 houses the Department of Pharmacology in the ground floor. The
department is well equipped.
Museum : The museum has250 crude specimens,neatly contained in small cylindrical jars duly
labelled. An index and catalogue for the museum specimens are available. The
museum is kept open between 10 A.M. and 4 P.M. There is a well equipped
Pharamcy lab, Experimental Pharmacology Lab and Demonstration hall.
Animal House : Animal house
which was started in 1954 has been remodelled and expanded. Now it contains
guinea pigs, rabbits, rats, mice and monkeys. A dog house is also in
existence.
Post Graduate Course : The
Department is well equipped for under graduate course. Post Graduate course
was started from 1957. Facilities are available for Research work leading to
Ph.D. Pharmacology Degree.
Clinical
Pharmacology : In 1990 a clinical pharmacology Department was started
in Govt. General Hospital for doing Clinical trials on patients. But recently
it has been shiftee to Hyderabad. During its short period manyu clinical
trials have been conducted.
Many research papers and dissertations had been presented by both
Pharmacology as well as clinical Pharmacology Departments.
