Department of Physiology

Dr. Vareed, the Head of the Department in the year 1947 was responsible for the commencement of the department, of course with inadequzte staff and the students were restless in view of rumours afloat to close the college and send thfem to Visakhapatnam. But in a year due to the persistant efforts of the staff, the college could get the root firmly fixed and the academic activity progressed.

 

            Dr. Vareed (1946-48) was succeeded by Dr. D.V. Subba Reddy (1949-1951) Dr. C.Venkataramaiah the founder father of many medical colleges like Kurnool and Tirupathi as a  Special Officer , headed the chair of this department in (1954-63) were responsible for the glory of the Department.

 

            Postgraduate course in Physiology was started and Dr. P. Simhadri was the first to qualify in M.Sc., in the year 1956. Later Dr. G. Joseph (1964-68), Dr. (Mrs.) K. Seetha Devi (1969) and Dr. Taher Ali (1969-70) and Dr.  Parvathi, Dr. J. Sarojini, Dr. Vijaya Rama Rao, have been guiding the destiny of the Department.

 

            An Associate Professor’s post was created to meet the demands of teaching due to increase in admission from 100 to 150 and Dr. (Mrs.). K. Seetha Devi was posted during 1965. Later Dr. T. Sarojini, Dr. P. Anandha Rao, Dr. Kameswara ‘Rao and Dr. G. Indira chaired the associated Professor’s post.

           

            Twelve postgraduates qualified for M.D. Physiology from this Institution. Dr. G. Joseph under the direction of B. Naganna did work on Hypothermia and qualified for Ph.D in Physiology.

 

            The Department is active in teaching the Undergraduates and the Postgraduates in all disciplines.

 

            Many papers have been published from this department in leading journals.
