The Department of Psychiatry has been stated in 1958
with a qualified Asst. Surgeon. A Post of professor was created in 1967 and
Dr.A.Sankara Rao was posted to this assignment Dr.sK.Bhujanga Rao and
M.Jagannadham are the other progessors who worked in this departments earlier.
Currently two qualifed Psychaintrists are on the rolls, Facilities for out
patients & in patient services are available. The out patinet department
runs daily and is thronged by as many as 40 patients (New & old patients
inclusive) . Physical & Psychological modalities of treatment are given.
The number of beds in the ward is eighteen.
The department attracts many patients from all circar districts of
Andhra Pradesh.
Undergraduate medical students are posted to the department for
learning basics of Psychiatry for a period of fifteen days. PG courses leading
to DPM had been started in the year 1985 & so far about ten students have
had their PG training in this institution.
Post graduate students in MD (Medicine) & (Paediatrics) are also
posted to the Department.
There is an urgent need to revamp the Department by increasing the
number of beds & providing mor qualified personnel including a clinical
Psychologis & Psychiatric social workers. & starting MD course in
Psychiatry.
