The faculty of Radiology consisting of diagnostic &
Radiotherapeutic disciplines was first introduced inearly 1950s in this
college with two X-ray units.
The Technology has undergone tremendous evolution since the invention
of X-rrays in1895 till today. With introductionof electronics and computers,
the radiological techniques have made revolutionary changes into Imaging
techniques & Ultrasound, CT, MRI & Iamge intensifying,l and
Conventional Radiology creeped into Intorventional Techiques during 1970s and
80s.
The First Radiologist was Pro. S. Venkateswarlu. FRCR., who was also
head of the Hospital. He developed the Departmet for 10 years from 1956 to
1966 with his talent andf workmanship to meet the needs in Diagnostic and
Therapeutic Radiology. The P.G. diploma (DMR) was first started during this
period in1959. One more 500 MA unit was aded in 1960.
Prof. Radhakrishna naidu, with his able guidance further elevated the
reputation of the Department during 1966-68.
Prof. T.Jaya Narasimhulu, a stalwart in Radiology made a tremendous
contribution for a long period during his stay from 1968 to 1977. Prof. R.
Venkateswarlu further potentiated the Department during his stay from 1977
to82. In 1978 the Department was vertically bifurcated into Diagnostic and
Therapeuticf branches headed by separate Professors, And this department was
redesignated as Department of Radio diagnosis’ and new diploma “D.M.R.D.”
Consisting of exlusive deagnostic science was stated in place of old combined
“D.M.R.”P.G. degree M.D.,
(Radio diagnosis ) was introduced in 1982. Two moire X-ray machines were added
during the period.
Pro. R.P. Deshpande during his short tenurefurther built up the Department.
Prof. C. Huliwala with his devoted work and fairness, further brought
up the Department during his stay from 1983 to 1991. To existing conventional
equipment. The first imaging modality – ultrasound – was introduced In
1987.
Prof. I. Satya Prasad rao, Prof. Rafatunnisa Begumk and Prof. Narayana
Rao lead the Departament fo short periods of time , from 1991 to 1995. Prof.
O. Sivaleela has been ‘Apatbandhu’ for this departament frojm 1991 to 1995
in the intervening periods as Professor in charge. She had made vigorous
contributions both as the Assistannt 8n Combined Department and as the
Professor inb Charge throught out her stay at Guntur.
It is unfortunate that due to severe constraints ofn funds, the
Department couldnot afford
further ‘enrichment’ of Modern Imaging Equipment during last decade.
Intercurrent Deficiencies in material and machinery caused significant
inability t9o offer adequate patient service and proper training to P.G. and
U.G. students.
We wish to have a “Glorious Radiology and imaging Department” in
future.
