Professor of Radio-Therapy

 

            The Department of Radiology was started in Guntur Medical college, Govt. General Hospital, Guntur 1950s. It was a combined department of Radio-Diagnosis and Radio-Therapy with Dr.S.Venkateswarlu as First Professor of Radiology. Then the treatment facilities available for Cancer were deep X-Ray Therapy and intra cavitry Radiation. Deep X-Ray Therapy functioned till 1977. This combined Department of Radiology was in existence upto 1983.

            In late 1983 combined radiology was bifurcated into Radio_Therapy and Radio-Diagonosis and a Separate Professor Dr.I.Satya Prasad Rao was posted to Radio-Therapy department and the department continues to finction as independent department of Radio-Therapy thereon.

            In Febrauary, 1984, Sri. S.Ramamuni Reddy, the then Hon’ble Minister for Medcial & Health leid the foundation stone for Cancer Unit and Govt. has sanctioned more sophistcated Tele_Cobalt Machine, Theratron 780-c ,A.E.C.L., Canada in 1989 to the Department.

            Sri Chundi Ranganayakulu Garu, a Phgilanthropist has donated Rs. 7 Lakhs through Indian cancer society, Guntur Branch. Guntur for construction of a separate Building for Cancer Department and the Government permitted to name the Unit as “Sri Chundi Ranganayakulu Cancer Unit” after the Donor.

            In April, 1991 the unit was inaugurated by Sri Janardhana Reddy, the then Hon’ble Chief Minister Since then the Unit is actively functioning and serving the needs fo people of 8 districts, guntur, Krishna, prakasam, East Gofavari, West Godavari, Vijayanagram, and Viskhapatnam as it is the only machine functioning for the entire Costal Districts of Andhra Pradesh in Governmnet Sector.

            Later for the future improvement of the Unit, the Indian Cancer Society, Guntur Branch, Guntur with Collector as President has donated for Caesium Brachy Therapy Kit and Air_Condirioning to provide Brachy Therapy Kit for which supply is awaited shortly from Babha Atomic Research Centre, Bombay.

            The Unit is providing Radio- Therapy treatment for 14 new cancer Patients I 2 Batches on alternate days and extending treatment for all types of Cancers. This unit is also importing Cancer Chemo Therapy for needy patients, wherever necessary.
