Community Medicine)
Department of Community Medicine (Social & Preventive) of
Guntur Medical College, Guntur, started on 19-9-1955 with a strength of 50
students of MBBS Clinical course. Subsequ ently the strength has been raised
100 and later 150 in 1960. The department initially was managed by
non-community Medicine-qualified medical officers. Later in 1975 Dr. N.
Sivarama Prasad, M.D. (S&PM) fully qualified in the cadre of Assistant
Professor was posted who was later promoted as Professor S&P.M and worked
in that capacity for next 25years and had brought up the department with
up-gradation and lot of improvements in having the fully wquipped museum and
labroratory for the students of M.B.B.S. Sanitary Inspector’s Training
Centificate Course was started in the year 1955. Last Batch for S.I.T.C. was
conducted in 1988-89. Laster Post graduate course were introduced in the year
1983 with one M.D. and one D.P.H. (Diploma in Public Health) and they are all
now in a many important positions in both private and public sectors. Among
them, one M.D. Postgraduate awardee is now working as Professor & Head of
the Department of Social & Preventive Medicine (Community Medicine),
Andhra Medical College, Visakhapatnam by name Dr. Narasimha Murthy. The
department has one Rural Health Centre at Tadikonda which is under the Rural
Health Centre at Tadikonda which is under the administrative control under the
supervision of the Professor & HOD of Community Medicine (S&PM) with
the following staff.
The Health Officer is entrusted with all the administrative and
Financial powers. He is helped by one Training Medical Officer exclusive for
Training and other academic work and one Male Medical Offcer and one Female
Medical care in the catchment area. They are helped by various other category
of para-medical staff.
The above Rural Health Centre, Tadikonda, is catering to curative and
preventive aspects for the population of 60,000 in and around Tadikonda
village/town.
R.H.C imparts training for the students of under graduate and
post graduate courses as well as Nursing Students of Govt. Gen. Hospital,
Guntur by arranging and conducting field programmes and also for UNICEF
activities under W.H.O. The Rural Health Centre also imparts training of
internees for one month. This training is compulsory to every under graduate
student. The tow Primary Health Centres at Nadurupadu and Emani in Guntur
district have been catering the training programme for rural training for the
internees for a periodof one
month. Under Re-orientation of Medical Education Programme a number of medical
camps were organised with specialist services of Govt. General Hospital,
Guntur. Specialists/in and around rural areas and slum areas in the town which
has benefited number of sick people with referral services to Government
General Hospital, Guntur.
