“I will not cut Even for stones. But leave such Procedures to the Practitioners of the Craft” Hippocrates (325 B.C.)

The Department of Urology in Guntur Medical College, Govt. General Hospital Guntur was started in 1978, with Dr. R.B. Krishna Murthy, M.S., F.R.C.S. (Edin) as Professor incharge in Deputy civil surgeon cadre. He was helped by two Asst civil surgeons in carrying ourn day to day work. It was started with sixteen beds in different wards and the same situation continues even today. The department was alotted tow theatre day and two out patient days in a week.

The Endoscopic work was started way back in 1978 with conventional Endoscopes, which were mainly used for Diognostic Purpose. Simpler invasive Diagnostic Procedures like Retrograde Catherisation and retrograde pyelograms were also not possible with those Endoscopes. All types of open surgical procedures were practised to treat different Urological disorders.

The present day rod lens Hopkins Endoscopes with fibre optic cold light system was introduced into the Department in 1983 for lower tract. Dr. R.B. Krishnamurthy was the Professor incharge from 1978 to 1983. Later he was succeeded by “Dr. M. Saranadh as the Professor and Head of Dept. of Urology.

However, the long awaited wish of having seprate Urology Ward for Urology department has remained elusive till now. We see about 1920 New patients., 4,100 old patients, per year and perform 300 major and 1500 minor urologic procedures every year.

The department actively participates in undergraduate and Postgraduate and paramedical training programmes. The department needs to equipped with few lower tract and upper tract endoscopic armamentarium to be able to deliver its goods effectively to the urologic patients. We have no M.Ch. training programme. We hope our long cherished desires will be fulfilled in the near future.
