Department of Venerology

 

The department of Venerelogy was started as a combined department of Dermatology, Venerelogy and Leprosy of the erstwhile Distric Head quarters Hospital, Guntur. Even after the Medical College was started, the Department continued to be a combined one. In 19556 the Department gor separated from dermatology. During the second five year plan the Department was approved as a V.D clinic under the Nationa V.D Control Project.

            Capt. Dr.J.S. Sharms, M.B.B.S. D.V. was appointed as the First Assistant surgeon Lecturer of the independent venereology Department. In 1966 the Department was upgraded and post of Civil surgeon was created. Dr.M.Ramachader, M.B.B.S. D.V.  was posted as first  civil Surgeon Venerelogist.

            In 1983 post graduate courses in M.D. and Diploma were commenced ater the approval by the M.C.I. and a post of profeesor of V.D. was created. Dr. R.V. Ramana Rao,M.D., D.V., was appoiinted as the professor of Venerelogy Department of Guntur Medical College, Guntur.

            One M.D. and One D.V candidate are admitted every year. So far seven students have been awarded the M.D degree.

            About 15 scientific papers were published in various journals and 10 papers presented in various S.E Asian National and State level confirences. Dr. T .Rama Sharan got the best paper award in the National conferences of I.A.S. S.T.D at jabalpur in 1988. Dr. B. suresh got the third prize in the National conference at Jaiput in 1993. Professor Dr.R.V Ramana rao and Dr.Y.S.C. Bose have spoken over A.I.R. on Department Is fully equipped for teaching under graduate and post graduate students and spreading awareness programme on AIDS for the benefit of public.
